COUNTING ON YOUR VOTE!

Catholic Charities has created a guide for the May 2nd federal election. It focuses on issues that are regularly raised by Catholic Charities and its member agencies and affect individuals and families of the most vulnerable in society. These include the need for affordable and supportive housing, the increased number of those who live in poverty and use food banks and whose family life has been seriously affected by the current economy.
While the economy is an important requirement in building a healthy society, Pope Benedict in Caritas in Veritate says that "the primary capital to be safeguarded and valued is the human person ". Canada's Bishops remind us that the responsible use of freedom means promotion of human life and the dignity of the person as well as the preferential option for the poor.
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
The Commission for Justice and Peace of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has issued a guide inviting Catholics to vote with discernment.
The Commission lists some basic principles from Catholic moral and social teaching to help voters analyse and evaluate public policies and programs.
The document focuses especially on respect for life and the dignity of the human person, social justice, the family, world peace and the environment.
